“Wouldn’t it be awesome if…”
What’s the first thing that comes to mind to finish that sentence? Perhaps it’s something random like, “Wouldn’t it be awesome if everyone in the US had a mandated 2-week all-expense paid vacation every year.” Or maybe it’s silly, “Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could swim in a pool full of jello?” (not sure where that one came from).
But maybe, your sentence would carry a little more meaning, maybe some pain, some joy, some passion, or some dreams.
For those that don’t know, First Trinity received a grant in August to build on some of the programs of our Lifetree Cafe location on the University at Buffalo Campus. We received this generous grant from Wheat Ridge Ministries (they’re amazing check it out!) based in Chicago. The specific Burst grant we received is for young adult applicants. As part of the grant program, they also bring together all the young adults who have received these grants in the last year for gathering each fall, which I am blessed to be taking part of today through Wednesday in Chicago.
After just hearing the introductions, I was blown away by the ways God is using the 15 people I’m surrounded by this week all over the country. To be honest, I headed to dinner kind of wondering why I’m even here, not feeling like I deserve to be in a room with these truly amazing people. But as the night went on God reminded my why I was here, and that I did belong. My project might not be changing the lives of refugees across the world or keeping veterans from committing suicide, however, like the people in this room, I too a dreamer and a doer. I, too, have the desire to make my life count by the grace of God.
The sentence starter above was one that a presenter tonight had us answer in partners. As I heard the answers my partner and I came up with (and the ones I overheard from those around me), I was almost brought to tears because in Jesus we have freedom to dream big dreams and have big hopes AND we won’t be left disappointed. Oh sure, the answers may not come in the ways that we imagine, but God is a God who I think might use this sentence… a God who dreams big dreams for His people and loves to watch HIS amazing plans come to fruition.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if everyone felt like they had at least one person who cared for them?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could talk about our beliefs and struggles openly without anyone shaming us?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could remember and realize that there really are enough resources for everyone in the world if we all just shared a little more?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if the stereotypes and stigma of mental illness were completely stripped away in our culture?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if everyone on the University at Buffalo campus heard about the love of Jesus this year?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if everyone on the University at Buffalo campus BELIEVED in Jesus this year?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if high schoolers felt like they could actually talk about their faith in school?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if…
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)
